Weekend Vibes

Life goes by far to quickly.  One day you are wishing that you could make all the rules and the next day you find yourself there in throws of being the rule maker, except it isn't nearly as glamorous as you thought and you wonder where the last two decades went.  I try to slow life down in those glorious two days called Saturday and Sunday.  Those days are not without commitments, places to be, tasks to accomplish but in those in between moments, we try to make life happen.  To make memories and connect.

I know I often have shots of places we have been but I thought that I would take my camera with me to look at our hometown through a different lens.  To notice the details we often over look and to find beauty in your surroundings.

Saturdays are usual filled with market morning bustles but this week we decided to skip it in lieu of heading to one of our favourite coffee stops Saint Paul Roastery.  The atmosphere is very laid back with the focus being on the coffee which they do very well.  The shop is nestled into our downtown core and connects to a record shop, New Day Records.  We could literally get lost for hours between the two places as both make you want to waste your day.  Also, the large windows allow for some great people watching which I could get paid to do.

After coffee, and in between dance class, we also wanted to fit in a hang out with one of our very best of friends.  Since we were already downtown, it was time for some lunch and more coffee.  This day, we chose another favourite stop which is Sweet North.  It is an all around perfect place to go if you have a wide variety of request in your party as they can do a simple coffee or serve a hearty lunch.

Picture

After lunch, we headed to another great shop downtown which is Thuja Floral Design.  This florist shop specializes in bringing local plants into flower design.  They also have plants such as succulents to add to your home decor.  We purchased a couple to add to our collection and with plans to make a felted vessel for the small succulent.  Hopefully, I will be able to share that in the near future once I  perfect the design and the execution.

Sundays for us have routine. We start with church first thing and the rest of the day is  a combination of play and preparation for the week ahead.  We are in the midst of renovation which also means we try to keep ahead of the ever changing needs of DIY.

One of our favourite places to spend time is at home.  As it is said, it's where you story begins and I say continues.  It is our place to be ourselves, relax, invite others and really enjoy the time with the ones we love.  In many ways, our home town feels like our home but maybe just the backyard.

I think my camera will be joining me on more adventures of the hometown variety very soon.

Orange and Black

The leaves have nearly completely fallen and that signals Halloween.  This, at minimum,  week long build up comes with lots of fun, sweets and some more then disappointing costume choices and idea. I can come up with some pretty fantastic ideas but my execution of these ideas is often less then stellar.  I have learned over the years that less is more, don't dismiss a bought outfit and always enlist help when you know your way over your head.

This year we are keeping it pretty low key.  With the actual day being on a Monday, if you have been around any child you know that they have already had their "pre-game" for the last week.  The Halloween "jet lag" will commence promptly on Tuesday morning.  Monday will be orange and black day for the regular work hours and little known fact, I do not own anything orange.  So I quick search on Pinterest brought me to the Jessica's blog called Cutesy Crafts .

Picture

What you will need is a t-shirt, freezer paper (you can get this from any grocery store), pencil (for drawing), fabric paint (I decided to use black and glitter), scissors, another pencil for dipping in the paint (I used a larger one and a regular sized one for different sized stamps) and an iron.

Using the freezer paper, you can make any shape you wish and simply cut it out.  I had never used this before and I have to saw, why didn't I know that freezer paper existed and is a thing for crafts??  From there, you put the "shiny" plasticized side down and iron it until the edges adhere to the t-shirt.

Keeping the shapes on the shirt, go a head and get creative!  I applied black first with the larger sized eraser and then went back in with silver.  After that, let it dry, peel of the designs and you have a custom t-shirt!  You could obviously use this for really anything.  To set the paint, I let it dry over night and then put an old, thin towel over top and go over the paint with a hot iron.

Overall, I am pretty happy with the way this Pinterest short cut worked out!  Easy, cheap and the kids will love it! I think I followed the important life lessons I learned from Halloween past.  I kept it simple, I reached out for an idea and gave myself enough time to get it done. Let's see how tomorrow turn out!

My partner and I love to have adventures.  Nothing too extreme, just the type of adventures that you jump in your car and drive for a while to a predetermined or completely new place and explore.  Often we find newness in places well travelled and will continue to go back to revisit through new eyes and seasons.

Today was no exception. With the leaves, for the majority, on the ground, the starkness of the landscape along the small but vibrant colour that remained made for some stunning vistas.  But in the details is where I find the most beauty.

Tonight, as I edited these images, the film The Secret Path was streaming.  This was a creative documentary done with collaboration from Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip which outlined the experience of a child through the residential school system in Canada.  It is interesting how in a moment, your perspective changes.  You seem to not really see what you were doing with the same lens as a moment before.

What I want to leave this post with is simply this; beauty can be found in healing.  Beauty can be found in the wreckage.  We can grow from our darkest moments. Find beauty, reach out, be kind to one another.

It was inevitable

Fall is here and almost gone.  Yes, it is true that although we have 4 distinct seasons, fall seems to be the most fleeting, the most dramatic and because routine starts again, the biggest risk of illness.

Every year I try and try to stay healthy but every year it feels like Russian roulette.  The cold/flu hits and makes day to day life that much more difficult.  I have learned that during this time keeping to my usual activity level leads me to be more ill, and in the long run harder to recover so I stop...mostly.  I have been still trying to walk just to keep the legs moving but not bring up my heart rate while battling a fever.

This week, trying to eat was a chore.  The thought of cooking left me lifeless and the attempts to eat was just truly unappetizing.  Soups have been the easiest for me to eat and while I wasn't truly inspired for the final result, it did give me moments of enjoyment to cut up and photography some of the ingredients.

I have been playing around with coffee as both a rub and marinade.  I have used KCups and actual grounds in soups and other meet dishes. I have also read that instant coffee works well but honestly, we just don't keep the stuff in the house although I am sure it would work just fine.  I have been loving the depth and richness it has given dishes and really, no over powering coffee taste at all.  In fact you wouldn't know if you weren't told that it is in the dishes.

Picture

There is something about onions. You can find multiple website based articles telling you about the amazing health benefits of eating, cooking and even putting onions in your socks...yes this is a thing.  I believe that onions, along with garlic, probably have many medicinal qualities but I will keep them out of my socks and in soup.

Picture

Making soup is the best way that I have found to clean out the fridge.  No two soups ever taste the same and somehow celery is always an ingredient.  Celery never seems to be fully eaten and there is always a stalk or more drying up in the crisper but in a soup it doesn't matter.  This year, our market seemed to have a plentiful bounty of celery which I insisted on buying every week.  This may account for my well stocked stalks.

Picture

Somewhere I have read that the deeper pigmented vegetables are, the more nutrients they have.  Luckily, all of these veggies have needed to be used.  I also read the beet soup is actually used in some areas of the world as we use chicken noodle soup.

So there you have it, a blog that rambles and doesn't make much sense at all but really an small opportunity for me to feel slightly human, slightly productive and maybe a bit more inspired to actually eat the food.

Although I know that my body needs the rest, not being able to run on some of the most gorgeous fall days we have seen in a while makes my skin crawl.  I am hoping one more rest day will give me enough energy to kick it.  Cheers to beets, garlic and anything healthy...down the hatch they go!

Thanksgiving Centrepiece

It been a while since I have put fingertips to keyboard for my blog.  The summer has been full of work and play to move our home plans forward.  Without boring you with the details, some of my creative outlets went to the wayside while important life details needed my attention.

Nothing gets me more into the creative mood then the changing of season, an opportunity to begin again, try something new and view your world through a different lens.  In my little corner of the world, we are blessed to have 4 distinct seasons which are just as dramatic in terms of change as you could well imagine.

Fall is full of colour, dramatic landscapes, stormy weather, cool nights, warm drinks and time spent indoors with family and friends.  Here in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October which is typically timed so that the leaves are turned into their fall colours just perfectly, family and gatherings only seem to make the landscape that much brighter and it screams for you to go outside and enjoy before snow keeps you wanting to be inside rather then out.

To help bring a bit of the outside in and to be able to bring in some of the outdoor colours, I jumped on a Pinterest trend of using a hallowed out pumpkin as a vase for fall flowers to have something to add to my family's Thanksgiving table.

Picture

One of our local farms (Belluz Farms) has a pumpkin weekend in which they celebrate all things harvest, round and pumpkin in nature.  That weekend we picked up pie pumpkins (perfect for roasting and freezing the pulp for cooking or baking later), 'boo' pumpkins (white little pumpkins for decorating and later to add to your compost pile), decorative pumpkins (grey green and great for composting), jack-o-lantern pumpkins (what the name implies) and this interesting pumpkin called a Kakai pumpkin. It isn't only because of it's interesting colour but that the seeds inside are hulless which means the seeds are green in colour, easier to eat and I would say have an almost nutty flavour to them.

What I wanted to do was be able to use the seeds but have a purpose for the interesting look.  Bring in Pinterest, my local Saturday morning market and there you have it,  a cute gift to bring to dinner and an interesting discussion starter as well.

Picture

With cold weather settling in, the wild flower variety at our local Thunder Bay Country Market is getting pretty limited however I was able to make due with some cut wheat from Moss Cottage: The Urban Farm Chick and a small bundle of leaves, dried wheat and miniature sunflowers from Mile Hill Farms.

Picture

As you can see, the seeds are a beautiful dark green with little pulp which made separating it fairly easy.  If you follow me on Snapchat (RunnerByDesign - daisyjanie) you might have seen that one of my best tips for making pumpkin seeds that I have found is to NOT rinse them.  I find that by rinsing them, you have to add so much oil of some sort to them and they don't have as good and rich of a taste.  Do clean them as best you can but after that simply put in a bowl, mix with melted better, add corse salt and any other seasonings you would like and roast them in the oven (350F) for about 10-20 minutes depending on the seeds and your oven.  Just keep a close eye.

Once you have your hallowed out pumpkin your ready to get some flowers, shrubs or any other items you would like to display into your pumpkin.  The thing to remember is that pumpkin will really only last a couple of days inside after it has been opened so you can get a bit more life out of it buy putting it outside as a lantern but really what you need to think about when building your masterpiece is taking the pieces out so that you can get some more enjoyment out of the flowers etc.

Picture

The rest is your imagination.  I used a mason jar so that the flowers can easily be taken out and displayed after the pumpkin is no longer.  The burlap I used to fill in space as most of the flora I had were tall and I wanted some volume on the bottom.  After the pumpkin is discarded, the burlap can be used to wrap around the mason jar to give some texture.  I had enough wheat to keep a bundle for myself and wrapped it with burlap and the ribbon it came with.

Mostly, I loved using my hands and creating something that can be enjoyed.  Going to a gathering where we are fortunate enough to have plentiful food, bringing more seems like it would be missing the point of being thankful.  Using what we have around us and somehow honouring the beauty from our area to me fit just a bit better.  What I love about creating something for someone is that it always look different and it's a true expression of love and connection from one to another.

I hope each of you have had a lovely weekend, enjoyed the outdoors and time with family and friends alike.

"I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual."

Run Slow...

I have noticed that my blog has become less of blog and more of a photography sharing.  Although this meets part of my creativity, I also started this blog as a means to share thoughts and my journey in different areas of my life.  With this in mind, I am shifting my blog today with only one image and many thoughts.

For my birthday this year, I was sent a gift in the mail from a dear friend.  Birthdays for me are days like any other and I don't like to stand on ceremony for them nor do I like to draw too much attention.  I don't indulge in birthday weeks or want anything more then a nice dinner, glass of wine and a night off. I relish in the simple pleasures of spending time reflecting on how I have spent my time.

This year, as mentioned, I received in the mail a book. It wasn't expected and was very much a surprise.  Probably one of the most surprising birthdays I have had simply for that reason.  This friend is  someone I connected with through running. Typically, I am a lone wolf in terms of running.  If asked ,I will often say that I love running for the time it gives me to be alone with me, my thoughts and my intentions.  However, in my journey through running, I have been connected with some amazing people.  Leanne is one such of these people.  To be fair, we both met through dance but later in life, when Leanne became my dance teacher, we discussed running and simply began to run together.
I am not sure if she is even aware of really how special this is for me as I don't run with many people. It isn't that I don't want to, it is more like mentioned above, that my time is small and often complicated to fit a run in.  Simply put, it has always seemed to work when we run, no effort needed.

That being said, we have many talks, questions, ideas of running along the way.  This is where this book comes into play.  This year has been a tough year for my running.  You see, I am at heart a very competitive person.  Running has satisfied this beast as the faster I ran, the faster I raced... to a point.  I trained fast and felt that doing this was good, I mean it makes sense, if I run fast in training I will faster when I race.  This theory began to break down in the early new year.  I found that my shins were giving out, then my runs became harder and then when I was finally without shin pain, the accident stopped me and my partner right in our tracks.

When I was able to run again, the runs were hard, really hard. Harder then I remember when I first started to run.  This didn't make sense to me, I had tried to continue with my running program as best I could, using the elliptical, biking, nothing seemed to have made a difference.

This weekend, Leanne was back in town, and we went for a run.  I felt like I would and was holding her back.  I was making excuses, trying to justify my pace and thats when Leanne mentioned the book 80/20 RUNNING by Matt Fitzgerald that she had sent me.  I had to be honest and say I hadn't read it yet.  The more she spoke about her own personal experience about slowing down, and me knowing how she had been doing at races (which is fantastic by the way) the more I know I had to listen.

Today I made time to pick up the book on my off day.  What I have read so far is slow run is even slower then what you think and the first order of business is to take a week of slow.  Luckily, I have a training program so slow it is for this week.

I am going to blog this process to see where it takes me not only physically but mentally.  I struggle with pace and go faster then I need to, I know this, but what happens when I call myself on it, what happens when I intentionally make a change.  We will see and really I have nothing to loose.

Summer Saturdays

Read Now

Yesterday was a Saturday jammed packed, although most of our days feel this way, the tasks for this Saturday was really driven by what we wanted to do.  For me, it started with connecting with a friend during a run. She has moved to California and although technology keeps us together, it can never be replaced with a run through one of our favourite trails here.

From there, some texts back and forth with a friend, we came up with a plan to hike Mount McKay.  I have been to the lookout many times but never to the top.  Most days I can disguise my fear of heights and push through but this day wasn't so easy.

With some understanding people around me, we were all able to enjoy the view from the top and get some simple pictures to capture our first hike up.  Although, I lean towards more lifestyle type shots, sometimes you need to sit together and look directly at the camera.

This post is to log this memory and to remember the day when we had no plans.

Today, the ceremony marked the official end of grade 8.  Grade 9 is merely a couple of months away, and although there is the unknown to contend with, there is also the beauty of the future, starting fresh and creating memories.  Some snaps of the more formal images as sometimes these moments are what make for some great memories :)

Intention - the word of the moment for me.  It is a word which has many meanings; purpose, present, with emotion, meaning, follow through, purposeful, boundaries, mindful... and I could go on.

Intention can also bring connotation of more negative meanings such as rigidity but I believe it to be the opposite.  Intention means to be present in moments when they change, as they change, being able to read situations, live in them, just be.

Today, in our little corner of the world, Noah must have been building an ark. We started with work that needed to be done, especially a dump run.  The weather for the past few days has been warm, with yesterday being especially so.  Today, as mentioned, the sky opened up and as we were at the dump, we experienced a very intense and beautiful lightening show.  As we made our way to town, the weather was not lifting but we had other tasks to attend to and so off we went.

As time passed, our appetites did not and we needed to eat something, and at the same time, wouldn't you know it but the weather did not clear but certainly slowed and held. So in the car, we decided we needed to get out for a bit.  We headed to our marina called Prince Arthur's Landing where we ate, walked, laughed and simply enjoyed the views.

One stop was one of my partner's and mine favourite, Breakwater Taphouse.  This spot holds special meaning to both of us as this was where we went on our first date and even more special as they will be closing their doors at the end of September due to development of the building. It was a great treat to be able to share this with my partner's daughter and it didn't hurt that Euro 2016 was playing on the television.

This year, it has been interesting in terms of how my focus have shifted but not changed.  My running, I had thought would be more prominent as in racing and goal chasing.  The reality of life and my focus to stay healthy and balanced means that running is not my be all and end all, it is an important part of me but not all of me.  I am far more then my pair of runners, races or times. With that being said, running, although maybe not so prominent, is just if not more important to me. This I learned far more clearly after we were struck my a drunk driver this month and I was unable to run.  The anger, the frustration, the guilt of feeling those things made for some interesting moments trying to deal with life that still went on and not having my running as an outlet.

What has helped me navigate these moments, is my them of intention.  My intention is to be the best me I can be in any given moment, to be thankful for what I have and to move forward with good vibes.

I am sharing some of todays moments shot only on my iPhone 6.  The videos I took with no intention to keep them but I decided to play around in iMovie to just play.  The song your hearing in the video is one my favourite Canadian musicians.  They are a married couple that goes by the name of Whitehorse.  He is a runner and I certainly relate to that but the music they make together is breathtaking.  The song is Mismatched Eyes (The Boat Song).

Grade 8 Graduation

Every time I attend a graduation, whether it be for kids that I teach, kids I am related to or kids that I know, my own memories of the feeling of the road ahead of me at that same time in my life come rushing back.

Today I was fortunate enough to see my partner's daughter, Claire, prior to her grade 8 graduation dinner and dance.  Although Claire and I have not known each other as long as others, we have been figuring out this thing called life as the "four of us" for some time now.  Claire is a free spirited, adventure seeking, fun loving girl who has a kind and open heart and mind. She is fiercely loyal and wants nothing more then everyone to be good. Claire loves her family deeply, blood and other wise, and will not hesitate to help when someone asks.  She is always up for trying something new so much so sometimes it leaves me wondering if we should have really tried that!

I would like to leave my words there with the understanding that not everything should be shared on this platform.  What I do want to say to all the graduates and students this year is remember your journey has just begun, oh the places you'll go!

Oh, the Places You'll Go!
by Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And then things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

You'll be on y our way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't.
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
that Bang-ups
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked.
A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.

You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place...

...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or the waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for the wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be as famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't
Because, sometimes they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul.
On you will go
though your enemies prowl.
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl.
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike,
And I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never foget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
You're off the Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!
